Shoe of the Week: Ready for Action

We're anticipating a huge snow storm here, really rolling in Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, so it seems only appropriate that this week would feature my no nonsense snow boots.

They're not as swanky as these special edition Sorel x Colette boots, but hey, they were also probably a lot cheaper.  Maybe I'll try to find some special laces - hah!

Things I Wish...

...I hadn't given away:
  1. Norma Kamali polka dot pumps (year of release (y.o.r.): circa 1980s)
  2. Holey Comme des Garcons sweater (y.o.r. 1997)
  3. Azzedine Alaia dress (y.o.r.: late 90's, early 00s)
I imagine this will be part of a series.  I'm constantly wishing I'd kept some article of clothing because now I would wear it.  It's not regret exactly; it's more like I have better long-term vision.

What I'm Wearing to Teach Today: 4

Okay, I'm using this picture because it looks kind of cool, not because it accurately shows what I'm wearing.  There's a bit of a ghostly feel to it, at least to me. (My walls are not green, but my couch is.)
Dress:  Chaiken (it's actually plum in colour)
Necklace:  Avon (!)
Tights: Wolford (they last forever)
Shoes:  La Canadienne

Shoe of the Week: Femme Object

I love these shoes, partly because of their beauty and partly because Liss bought them for me at Bergdorf Goodman.  I really appreciated it because, if you're butch (like Liss), shopping in the women's shoe department of a rather upscale department store can be intimidating or discomforting.  She was willing to put herself out there so I could have these terribly snazzy shoes.  Love the shoe, love the gesture.

Just Kids

Last night, on my way home on the train, I finished Patti Smith's book Just Kids.  There were a lot of things I really loved about it.  It gave a window into a time period that I've already credited with being one of the most dynamic and creative of the century (late 60s - 70s) in a city I wish I could've experienced then - New York.  It was lyrical (something I had to allow myself to settle into) and moving.  I found, however, that Smith maintains an emotional distance throughout.  Not that her love and affection for Robert Mapplethorpe isn't clearly demonstrated.  It is.  However, I missed her emotional responses to things that were happening to her specifically, individually.

What I Wore Today

Occasionally I look at photos of me and my outfits and think, "Jeez, now I know why people stare at me sometimes."  There are times when I just look a little kooky.

What I'm Wearing to Teach Today: Beyond Photo

Not really beyond photo, but I couldn't snap one that worked this morning.  There were some details I was trying to capture that just either merged into the background or were cut off.  Hey, it was 7:20am.  Not my sharpest hour.  This weekend I'll find the right spot with the right light to take these self-portraits, but in the meantime I'll narrate what I'm wearing.  Maybe the ladyfriend will take a photo tonight when I get home.

Shoe of the Week: Back in Black

Today's post is a shopping post.  I'm looking for a sharp black patent pump.  Yes, I own black shoes, but nothing that has the sexiness of these contenders:
Yves Saint Laurent - but could I actually walk in them?
Gucci - a little less intense, but then again, maybe it's intensity I'm after.
Pour la Victoire - hidden 1" platform with a 5" heel, but the description says it has a 3.5" pitch.  Does that mean I could walk in them?  Not surprisingly, these are the most budget friendly.

Tool or Toy?

I've started thinking that I should get a smart phone.  Now, I don't use my dumb phone very often; however, the smart phone is beginning to seem like a Leatherman-type tool.  I fantasize about posting more spontaneously (but don't worry - nothing like "ooh, I'm eating a bagel" crap), watching a video podcast, listening to music, etc.  Maybe I'd make a call on it once in awhile.

What I'm afraid of is that I might just be getting sucked into something I don't really need but am perceiving I have a need for, and god knows I don't want to become one of those textatrons with my head down scrolling through my "device."  (Related sidenote:  I've made a promise to not waver in my path if someone totally oblivious to the outside world because they're on their phone is about to bump into me.)

It's probably better that I don't really have the funding to do this at the moment, but I'm curious how other people are finding their smart phones and whether they really do have desirable (a key factor) functionality.

What I'm Wearing to Teach Today

Bear with me as I figure out where & how to take my early morning self-portraits.
Today's outfit features an old Ralph Lauren dress with another old piece, a Dries Van Noten sweater.  I'm wearing La Canadienne boots because they both look good and work in the snow.

Shoe of the Week: Snow Kickers!

You may not be able to tell from this picture, but these are rubber boots.  My parents gave them to me for Christmas, and I have to say - at first, I wasn't so sure.  But I decided to try them out, and they have won me over.  Not surprisingly, they elicit a lot of responses - all good so far.  I have yet to wear them with a dress or skirt, but that is not far away on the horizon.  I'd like to take some more risks this year with pattern mixing, and I think these will be good for that.

Leftover 2010 or Preview of 2011?

The internet is down at my house so I can't upload the Shoe of the Week; however, I'm hoping that these first few days of January are not indicative of the shape of the rest of my year.

I thought maybe I'd escape the bug that my parents got while visiting us for the holidays, but as the photo illustrates, I got sick on our flight home.  Liss was quite impressed with how discreet I was - I turned off my overhead light and managed to...yes, puke...almost silently.  We were flying Executive class (whoo-hoo!), and I had to leave behind all the yummy stuff I'd consumed on the flight.  Not so executive.

I'd forgotten how violent throwing up is.  Thankfully, after two more "episodes" at home, I seemed to be done with it.  I figure that since I haven't gotten this kind of ill in awhile maybe it was my turn, and hopefully I'll get a pass on it for awhile.  Now we're just waiting to see if the ladyfriend gets it...
